Trans Fats Exposed

Scientific evidence shows that consumption of saturated fat, trans fat, and dietary cholesterol raises low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or "bad" cholesterol levels, which increases the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health, more than 12.5 million Americans have CHD, and more than 500,000 die each year. That makes CHD one of the leading causes of death in the United States.

Trans fatty acids is an artery-clogging fat that is formed when vegetable oils are hardened. It is found in many foods including fried foods, doughnuts, cookies, pastries and crackers. In the United States, many popular cookies and crackers range from 30 to 50 percent trans fatty acids.

Good news:  The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) now requires food manufacturers to list trans fat (i.e., trans fatty acids) on Nutrition Facts and some Supplement Facts panels.  Click here to read more.  Look for their Pop Quiz too!

MORE good news:  Direct Labs now offers the Bloodspot™ Fatty Acid Profile assay, from a simple finger-stick, which measures the ratio of Arachidonic Acid (AA) to Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA). This ratio of the principle omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids is a measure of the body’s eicosanoid balance. Balancing the eicosanoids in the body is an excellent way for managing heart disease and other chronic and inflammatory processes.  Click here for details.

Look for special pricing soon when it is the August test of the month!
