Description: The Celiac & Gluten Sensitivity test tests a patient's blood for total IgA as well as IgA specific antibodies for possible celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. Celiac disease, also known as celiac sprue or gluten sensitivity, is a chronic autoimmune (body produces antibodies that attack its own tissues) disease which has a genetic component and may affect several family members. Celiac is a lifelong condition with no cure however, it is manageable once diagnosed.

Celiac disease is a digestive condition triggered by consumption of the protein gluten, which is found in bread, pasta, cookies, pizza crust, and many other foods containing wheat, barley, or rye. When a person with Celiac Disease eats food containing gluten, an immune reaction occurs in the small intestine, resulting in damage to the surface of the small intestine and an inability to absorb certain nutrients from food.
