Description: C. difficile is a type of bacteria found in the digestive tract that can cause symptoms ranging from diarrhea to life-threatening inflammation of the colon. It most commonly affects older adults in hospitals or long-term care facilities and typically occurs after the use of antibiotics. The risk of infection increases with age as well as for those who have recently undergone chemotherapy, had gastrointestinal surgery, suffer from chronic colon conditions or have weakened immune systems. C. Diff typically produces two toxins, A and B. The production of these toxins along with the growth of C. Diff bacteria can damage the lining of the digestive tract. This damage can result in inflammation of the colon which often causes prolonged diarrhea.
