Tetanus Antitoxoid
Fasting Required: No

Specimen: Blood

Results: 2-3 Business Days

Description: Assess immunity against tetanus. Tetanus is a severe and potentially fatal disease that is described by generalized increased stiffness and violent spasms of skeletal muscles. The spores enter the body through breaks in the skin, and grow under low-oxygen conditions. Tetanus is caused by Clostridium tetani. Immunization with Tetanus Antitoxoid is effective with boosters. This test assesses Tetanus Antitoxoid Antibody following booster immunization. Immunization supports an intact humoral antibody response.

Puncture wounds and wounds with a major amount of tissue injury are more likely to stimulate growth. The muscle stiffness usually first involves the jaw (lockjaw) and neck, and later becomes widespread throughout the body. Tetanus cannot be caught from other people.

Methodology: Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA)
