Interleukin-2 (IL-2)
Fasting Required: No

Specimen: Serum, frozen

Results: 10 - 14 Business Days

Description: It is a protein that regulates the activities of white blood cells (leukocytes, often lymphocytes) that are responsible for immunity. IL-2 is part of the body's natural response to microbial infection, and in discriminating between foreign ("non-self") and "self".

A substance that our bodies naturally produce which can improve the body's natural response to infection and disease that enhances the ability of the immune system to kill tumor cells.

Methodology: Immunoassay (IA)

Clinical Significance: IL-2 is a protein cytokine produced primarily by T-helper lymphocytes in response to infection. IL-2 signals T cell proliferation and antibody secretion by B cells. IL-2 therapy is approved for treatment of certain types of cancer and is being studied for treatment of other medical conditions.
