Lyme disease is a common vector-borne disease in the U.S. caused by Borrelia burgdorferi which is transmitted through the bite of infected ticks. It may become a chronic disease involving the skin (rash), joints (arthritis), central nervous system, and heart. The disease responds to antibiotic therapy. In early disease, a negative result does not exclude the diagnosis and response may be blunted by antibiotics. Provides both IgM and IgG Western blot results. The sensitivity of a Western blot assay by itself is not sufficient to assess Lyme infection adequately.
