Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) typically causes oral herpes, an infection of the lips and mouth, that is commonly known as cold sores or fever blisters. Genital herpes is generally caused by herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2). The herpes simplex virus is transmitted by direct contact with a sore or the body fluid of an infected individual.
